The Mission of the Saint Andrews’s “Holy Smokes” Chile Farm is community outreach and to replenish the Native Seed Bank. The “farm” is the community garden located at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church on Dry Creek Road in Sedona.
Why is it important? Native peoples in Arizona lost their water rights during forced relocation to reservations. The result was a devastating effect on native food sources and seed reserves and an immediate and ongoing diabetes epidemic due to the change in diet. In recent years those water rights were restored giving rise to a growing movement to return to native foods and gardening methods. However, dangerously low seed bank reserves hampered the success.
Partner growers like the “Holy Smokes” Chile Farm support these efforts by being seed savers. Currently we grow: “Supai Red” Corn, Tepary Beans, and Navajo Cushaw Squash. These “Three Sisters” are varieties well suited to our high desert climate and easy to grow. Since we began the “farm” we have returned several pounds of seed to the Native Seed Bank each year.
Why grow chile plants?. Profits from the sale of chile powder and chile jam support the operating costs of the “farm”. The Chimayo chile is a medium heat chile with a distinct sweet smoky flavor. Local restaurants: Up The Creek and Gerardo’s, are commercial users and the chili powder and jams are sold at retail through the church and now at Sedona Real.
Gardening is farming and it is labor intensive and seasonal. Preparing the garden, planting, nurturing, picking, hand processing, drying, grinding, and packaging are just a beginning. As you can see, not all the work is in the garden. Folks will get a "winter break", but there is almost always something to do!
Volunteers are always welcome! and do not need to be church members. Volunteering is generally scheduled around seasonal needs and work schedules. Right now is the time to prepare our garden soil for spring planting.
